HIS BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Temple Grandin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her achievements are remarkable since she was a child with autism. At the age of 2 he was non-verbal and displayed all the signs of severe autism. Fortunately her mother defied all the medical rulings and kept her out of any institution. Many hours of intensive language therapy and teaching allowed him to develop speech. In adolescence her life was hard and she was exposed to constant annoyances (bullying). The teachings and accompaniment of her high school science teacher and her aunt on her ranch in Arizona motivated her to pursue a career in agricultural equipment design and as a scientist.

Dr. Temple earned her degree from Franklin Pierce College in 1970. In 1974 she was employed as an agricultural editor at the Arizona Farmer Ranchman and also worked for Corral Industries designing equipment. In 1975 he earned his Master's in Animal Science from Arizona State University for his work on cattle behavior in different milking units. Dr. was awarded her Ph.D. in Animal Sciences from the University of Illinois in 1989 and is currently a Professor at Colorado State University.

He has done extensive work designing livestock handling facilities. Half of the cattle in the United States and Canada are handled in facilities she designed for meat plants. Other professional activities include the development of guidelines that guarantee the welfare of animals in meat plants together for McDonald's, Wendy's International, Burger King, among others.

Following his doctoral research on the effects of environmental enrichment on pig behavior, he has published several hundred technical papers and book chapters dealing with animal management, as well as 45 articles and 7 books. At the University of Colorado, he continues his research and teaches animal management and design of facilities and equipment for this purpose. His book "Animals in Translation" was a New York Times best-seller and his book "Livestock Handling and transport" is now in its 3rd edition, which was published in 2007. Other books of his authorship are "Thinking in pictures", "Emergence Labeled Autistic", "Animals Make us Human", "Improving Animal Welfare: A Practical Approach” (Improving Animal Welfare: A Practical Approach) and “The way I see it”.
